Snowdrop was the first flower to push through the frozen ground. While the other bulbs slept beneath the ice, she stretched her white petals toward the gray winter sky.
“You’re too early,” the frost warned. “You’ll freeze.”
“I can’t wait,” Snowdrop said. “The world needs beauty now.”
The frost wrapped around her stem. The wind whipped her petals. Snowdrop shivered but did not close.
A hungry bird, searching for food in the barren field, saw Snowdrop’s white face. “You’re the only color here,” he said.
He ate a seed from her center, gaining strength to fly south.
